Ghost Tours St. Augustine, Florida -The Haunted Wooden Schoolhouse

The haunted wooden schoolhouse in St. Augustine, Florida is also said to be the oldest schoolhouse in the area. It is believed that this school was constructed in the early 1700's.

In the earliest history of this particular building, it is known that this structure served as a home to a man by the name of Juan Genoply. It is believed that this individual was a schoolmaster and his passion was educating small children in the area. Eventually, the teacher decided to marry his true love and created a small home for himself and his family in the upstairs area, and developed the downstairs area into a classroom. Here, you will learn about the history of this haunted wooden schoolhouse that may also be the oldest schoolhouse in the entire nation.

One of the most notable things about this particular schoolhouse is that it was actually named as the first "co-ed" schools of the time. Boys and girls of the area gathered in order to receive their education in this building when it was first established. If you visit this school today, you will come in contact with make believe characters that will tell you about the building, what school was like, and the different things that happened in the building. However, these mechanical type recordings do not relay information about the hauntings that seem to have occurred all throughout history in this building, and on the grounds of the building.

It is believed that the old schoolmaster and his family still look after the little schoolhouse that they put so much work into during their lives. Many individuals who have scrolled past the structure at night have claimed that there appears to be a moving a light in the upper room of the building – despite the fact that no one has resided in there in many years, and that it is closed at night. Local police have been called to inspect the area when this has occurred, and there is no indication whatsoever that anyone has entered the structure. In the time in which the schoolmaster and his family lived here, light was made possible by candles and lamps. The people who have described the light say that it resembles that of a candle.

If you visit the structure at night, when the city is quiet, it may be possible for you to hear the faint giggles of young children around the structure – particularly near the area where there once stood a play yard for the kids. You may even feel a brush of wind sweep past you – like a child running past! There have been no cases documented where the spirits appear to be anything but friendly. If you enjoy history, and have a love for the paranormal, the haunted wooden schoolhouse in St. Augustine, Florida is waiting for you!
